Do you want a low maintenance kitchen when you remodel?

Schrock Thermafoil White Cabinetry

Schrock Thermofoil White Cabinetry

An important consideration when planning to remodel your kitchen is how much time you plan to spend cleaning and maintaining the cabinetry. It will only look beautiful for years to come if you care for it on a regular basis. With today’s hectic lifestyles, few people want to spend their precious free time cleaning. Of course, if you can afford it, you could hire someone to do this work. But for the moment, let’s say that’s not an option.

White cabinetry is very popular, and one type of white cabinetry is particularly easy to clean. Thermofoil cabinets are an easily maintained product. Sleek and smooth-surfaced, Thermofoil cabinetry from Schrock offers a sophisticated appearance along with exceptional durability and ease of maintenance for today’s hard-working kitchen. You should be aware that White and Cashmere color may change slightly over time, depending on environmental conditions.

Thermofoil is a process where heat and pressure are used to bond a thin layer of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) film to a shaped and glued component made from MDF (medium density fiberboard). The result is a seamless surface that covers a panel’s face and edges. The component back uses a white, seamless melamine surface – excellent for easy cleaning.

Cleaning guidelines from Schrock Cabinetry:
A soft cotton cloth dampened with warm water is usually sufficient to clean your cabinets. If more thorough cleaning is required, please use a fresh solution of mild hand dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water. After cleaning, wipe all surfaces with a clean, damp cloth. Dry immediately using another soft, clean cloth. Click here to read more, such as cleaning products to avoid.

Next time, we’ll talk about easy to clean and maintain countertop material.

Cambria Berkeley and Rosslyn Countertop Designs

This August, Cambria has released two new countertop designs: Berkeley and Rosslyn.  Berkeley is a new part of Cambria’s Waterstone Collection. Here’s what Cambria says about this new design and the origin of its name:

“Berkeley takes its name from a southern English town, and its inspiration from the river that runs through it. Hints of copper and a smattering of bronze swim among a riverbed of sandy tones, infusing this tastefully restrained design with equal parts verve and elegance.”

Learn more about the Berkeley design on Cambria’s website.

Cambria’s other new August release, Rosslyn, is a part of their Jewel Collection. Here’s what Cambria has to say about Rosslyn:

Like the sunlight that pierces the mysterious shadows of the wondrous Rosslyn Chapel [in Scotland], this design’s striking metallic golds shimmer against a nuanced background of taupe and tans in a masterful addition to the Jewel Collection.

Learn more about the Rosslyn design on Cambria’s website.

These and many other quartz countertop designs are available from all Kitchen Views showrooms.

Designing a Kitchen for a Left-Handed Cook: Lee Turner

Lee Turner, Designer, Kitchen Views, Newton, MA

Statistics show that 10-15% of people are left-handed. Men are twice as likely as women to be left-handed. If both parents are left-handed, on average only half of their children will also be left-handed. For these left-handed people in a mostly right-handed world, many daily tasks can be made more difficult than necessary.

It’s said that lefties are better at multi-tasking and adapting. Is this because of a difference in how their minds work, or a result of learning it was necessary to adapt? Many brilliant and creative people are left-handed. But having something designed especially for a lefty makes daily tasks so much easier.

For Laura Kay, designing a new kitchen from scratch gave her the perfect opportunity to have the room designed especially for her left-handed activities. From the work flow placement of the appliances to the faucet on the kitchen sink, this room layout was planned to make her everyday chores feel like less work.

Amy Mood: The First Ever Kitchen Power Grommet

Mockett Kitchen Power Grommet

Mockett Kitchen Power Grommet

“The First Ever Kitchen Power Grommet” by Amy Mood

Here’s something to keep in mind when designing an island into your kitchen.  All islands need to have a power source built in to them in order to safely plug in any small appliance that you may want to use there.  Typically the problem, especially on a single level island, is where to locate it inconspicuously, but in a spot that will be functional.  No one really wants to cut in to a decorative cabinet side or to have an outlet be a “focal point”.

One great solution is a pop up power grommet.  They are designed for kitchens or any place that liquids could spill.  There is a clear rubber ring around the top that forms a seal when the unit is closed, preventing water and other liquids from getting in.  To use it, you simply pull up on it to lock it in place and push a button on the bottom and push it back down when you are done.

What a great solution to one of those “little details” make the difference in a kitchen design!
